Obituary for Fellger Russell Johnson

Fellger Russell Johnson, 93, passed away on December 8, 2018. He was born on August 11, 1925 in Logan, Utah, the second child of Uben and Louise Johnson, named after his mother’s family name. He enjoyed a connection with his mother’s family in Canada and visited his maternal grandparents in McGrath on their family farm several times. Fellger grew up in Logan “in the old sixth ward.” He attended Logan High School and enjoyed participating on the swim team. He graduated high school in 1943 before enlisting in the Navy in the same year and served his country in the South Pacific as a Carpenter’s Mate on PT boats for three years.
Upon returning home, he spent two years attending Utah State University and eventually married Orma Jean Alder on May 21, 1946 in the Logan, Utah Temple for time and all eternity. After marrying Orma, the couple moved to River Heights in a home Fellger built with the help of his father in 1951. Soon after moving, he began working at Hill Air Force Base. He was a charter member of the River Heights Lions Club, of which he was also a founding member. He also served as president of the organization two times and always enjoyed cooking for their annual chuckwagon breakfast. Fellger served in many other capacities including as a River Heights Town Council Member for eight years. He also served as an Explorer Leader taking many trips with Explorers and no one will forget the trip to the Middle Fork of the Salmon. His lifetime of service also included numerous callings for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with time spent in High Priest Group Leadership, an Elder’s Quorum Presidency, and as a temple worker at the Logan, Utah Temple for fifteen years.

Fellger loved building furniture and other items, often welcoming people into his woodshop. He worked as a pattern maker during his time at Hill Air Force Base and was tasked with crafting a gold-inlaid shovel for the ground-breaking ceremony in Colorado Springs. His expertise in his work led him to make several other pieces of furniture including boats, cedar chests, toy kitchens, and more. The crown jewel of his talent in building, though, was building a camper out of a Cadillac Limousine which he took on several camping trips to enjoy the great outdoors by camping, hunting, and fishing. Fellger always loved having his family with him on these trips and would always cook pancakes on their outings. He also enjoyed singing and sang solid bass in a barbershop quartet for many years. Fellger also enjoyed attending Utah State University basketball games and loved cheering the Aggies to victory.

Fellger was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Orma Jean, brothers Elmer and Louis, his grandson, Paul, as well as several in-laws. He is survived by his older sister, Luana Davis, and three children: Kallin (Linda) of Worcester, MA; Russ (Pam) of Logan, Utah; Karol Jean Coleman (Kerry) of Tremonton, Utah; as well as eight grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren: Christopher Johnson (Jennedy) of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and their children, Giovanna, Lucia and Celestina; Aaron Olivarez of Sandy, Utah and his daughter Ava; Joshua Johnson (Tara) of Providence, Utah and their children Jessie, Grady, and Micah; Jennifer Buenaflor (Joseph) of Herriman, Utah and their daughter Ariana; Cassie Sipes (Jason) of River Heights; Malynda Campanella (Anthony) of Fountain, Colorado and their children Ashleigh, Malyssa, Matthew, and Alivya; Jacob Coleman (Lesley) of Avondale Arizona and their children Wyatt, Weston, and Maci; Paul Coleman deceased (Janette) and their children Scarlett, Joslyn, and Juliet; Rebecka Lane of Tremonton and her children Tyler, Rachel, Colton, Emily, Ethan.
Funeral services will be held at the Nyman Funeral Home on Friday, December 14 at twelve o’clock with a viewing held prior from ten to eleven thirty. Burial will be at the Providence Cemetery at 1:15 with full military honors. The family would like to thank Dr. James Mathews and the nurses and caregivers with Signature Hospice Home Care and also the VA which provided CNA’s from Caregiver Support.
